The story of UMIAK began in 2019, when Eva-Maria Karbacher (saxophone) and <\/i>Christian Moser (oud) embarked on joint sound research. In 2021 they invited for <\/i>performances with a dance project, the cellist Alfred Zimmerlin was invited to join the band. <\/i>which pleased all three of them so much that UMIAK has been a \u00abworking band\u00bb as a trio ever since, <\/i>who improvises fine chamber music in concerts.<\/i><\/p>\n
The trio's playing is characterized by an alert interaction and a high sensitivity for <\/i>sound design. Texture-oriented interplay and homogeneity of the sound material <\/i>have just as much a place in UMIAK's music as allowing for breaks, <\/i>absurdities and the conciseness of individuality.\u00a0<\/i>The three musicians transcend their different musical backgrounds. <\/i>starting points and experiences into an idiosyncratic, collective sound that they can <\/i>Reinventing performance again.<\/i><\/p>\n

Their music explores the different sound possibilities of the saxophone and <\/i>combines these with melodic elements. Improvisation and the curiosity for new <\/i>sounds form the core of their musical work. <\/i>Eva-Maria Karbacher appeared throughout Europe as a <\/i>She performs as a solo improviser and in various formations and ensembles. She currently plays <\/i>in the Duo Karbacher-Vryzas (with Dimos Vryzas, violin), in the Trio UMIAK (with Alfred <\/i>Zimmerlin, cello and Christian Moser, oud), in the duo Interrupted Lava (with Lara S\u00fc, <\/i>voice), in the duo Around the Corner (with Victor Barcel\u00f3, percussion) and in the <\/i>Unorthodoxjukebox Orchestra.<\/i><\/p>\n Christian Moser (1980) is an oud player and improviser with an interest in cultural <\/i>Diversity and creative difference. After studying the violin, at the age of 18 he discovered <\/i>the oud and studied between 2005 and 2010 at the I.T.\u00dc. Conservatory for Turkish <\/i>Music in Istanbul. In 2020, he completed a Master of Art in specialized performance \/ freelance <\/i>improvisation. Christian lives and works in Basel and has performed all over Europe in various <\/i>ensembles, composes music for film and dance and curates concert series for <\/i>experimental music (FIM Basel). He has received several awards\/residencies and <\/i>is currently working on various projects, including UMIAK (Alfred Zimmerlin, Eva-Maria <\/i>Karbacher), Gr\u00fcm (Thomas Rohrer, Lara S\u00fcss, Jacek Chmiel), Sere Serpe (Gizem Simsek, <\/i>Lucio Morelli) and Minimal Atmos Oud Bass Duo (Thomas Jeker).<\/i><\/p>\n Alfred Zimmerlin (*1955) is a composer and improviser (cello). Zimmerlin studied <\/i>musicology, ethnomusicology and composition. He maintains a lively international <\/i>concert activity, for example with the trio Kimmig-Studer-Zimmerlin, the electro band Zimmerlin <\/i>Stoffner Meier, the trio UMIAK (with Eva-Maria Karbacher and Christian Moser) and <\/i>numerous other formations. For 36 years he worked in the innovative <\/i>Composer collective and improvisation trio KARL ein KARL. <\/i>As a composer, Zimmerlin has created an extensive oeuvre of piano pieces, chamber music <\/i>with or without electronics, vocal music, orchestral music or music theater works. <\/i>His diverse activities are documented on numerous recordings. Among others <\/i>he received the Culture Prize of the Canton of Zurich in 2014 and the Swiss Music Prize in 2016.
