Four years after his powerful rock album PURITAN<\/em> lays Chris Brokaw<\/strong>, known as the guitarist of the influential slowcore pioneers Codeine<\/strong>, with GHOST SHIP<\/em> an intense, atmospherically charged work - a maritime landscape meditation for vocals and electric guitars.<\/p>\n

\u201eI actually wanted an 8-song statement in the style of Desert Shore<\/em> or Raw Power<\/em> but it ended up being nine songs. I told friends it was \u2018Twin-Peaks-like<\/strong>\u2019, but that's only partly true. The pieces were written on a Teisco Del Rey electric guitar from the 60s, with heavy flatwound strings, low tuned electric strings and a completely different feel. I wrote everything in a kind of fever.\u201c - Chris Brokaw<\/p>\n

GHOST SHIP<\/em> is an album that is best listened to in its entirety - loud, close to the speaker, perhaps under a violet light. It feels like a live set that transports you to the bottom of the ocean, under a transmission mast, surrounded by a semi-circle of effects pedals.
Despite its dreamlike quality, the album remains clear and direct: the dialog-like chords of \u201e8 Or 9 Things\u201c, the sharply falling final notes of \u201eProfile\u201c or the eruptive outburst of \u201eAnything Anymore\u201c show a special precision. Echolocation-like, the songs miss spaces, distances and things that have disappeared - perhaps drugs, perhaps a lost love. \u201eI'm a ghost ship on a long trip \/ and if you come aboard I'll never run ashore.\u201c - Mimi Lipson<\/p>\n

Chris Brokaw<\/strong> is known to many above all for his work with Codeine<\/strong> and Come<\/strong> known. Since 2002, he has released over two dozen solo albums and played in The New Year, Pullman, Charnel Ground and the Lemonheads<\/strong>. He has written film music for nine films, most recently Crookedfinger<\/em>, and composed for dance and art projects, including Lowlands<\/em> in Stavanger, Norway.<\/p>\n

As a versatile musician, he has already worked with Thurston Moore, Christina Rosenvinge, Rhys Chatham, Jennifer O'Connor, Steve Wynn<\/strong> and even GG Allin<\/strong>. He is currently playing in Lupa Citta, The Martha's Vineyard Ferries<\/strong> and the Chris Brokaw Rock Band<\/strong>. He also continues to perform regularly with Codeine<\/strong> and Come<\/strong> on.<\/p>\n
