With the concert series 200 hertz – Female Sounds presents the MPS Studio Outstanding international female musicians spanning the genres of improvisation, jazz, and experimental sound art. On September 5, the Polish pianist Marta Warelis and the Brazilian drummer, singer, and composer Mariá Portugal first published in MPS Studio onto each other.
The duo creates intense soundscapes that blend delicate percussive textures, prepared piano, vocals, and explosive energy. Their music moves freely between improvisation, experimental sounds, and song-like moments—spontaneous, powerful, and full of surprises.
Marta Warelis is one of the most exciting voices on the European improvisation scene. The Polish-born pianist lives in Amsterdam and collaborates internationally with renowned musicians from the free jazz and experimental scene. Their playing combines virtuosity, sonic curiosity, and radical openness.
Mariá, Portugal, born in São Paulo and now based in Berlin, is a drummer, singer, composer, and curator. She combines free improvisation with Brazilian musical traditions and works worldwide in a wide variety of musical contexts; most recently, she has been performing as a drummer with the renowned Fire! Orchestra has appeared on stages across Europe. In 2025, she was nominated for the German Jazz Prize nominated.
Their collaboration began in Berlin in 2025 as part of the festival March Music and immediately developed a unique musical chemistry. Together, they create an intense live experience that impressively explores the possibilities of improvised music.
