He is the pianist for Laibach—and at the same time an artist in his own right who continually explores the boundaries between contemporary music, improvisation, electronic music, and performance: Sašo Vollmaier Come to the second evening of our Ljubljana Special to the MPS Studio.

As a pianist and composer, he is Vollmaier deeply rooted in Ljubljana’s exceptionally diverse music scene. His musical work consistently bridges these worlds. Classical piano, contemporary music, improvisation, electronic music, and performance are not separate disciplines for him, but rather different forms of expression within his own musical language. Vollmaier is interested in the instrument’s possibilities as well as its limitations—and from this, he develops music that is precise, physical, radical, and surprisingly immediate.

An important point of reference in his work is the Hungarian composer György Ligeti. With his program Vollmaier: Ligeti In 2023, he was part of the prestigious Ligeti 100 Festivals in Budapest, where he performed at the Opus Jazz Club at the Budapest Music Center. In his exploration of Ligeti’s work, Vollmaier combines classical piano repertoire with his own variations, electronic sound processing, and performative elements.

His close ties to the Slovenian avant-garde are also evident in his project „Kind of Laibach“. In it, Vollmaier transposes the monumental, industrial soundscape of the legendary Slovenian band onto the concert grand piano. The result is not a classical interpretation, but a radical translation: Laibach’s sonic aesthetic is condensed into the possibilities of a single instrument. In addition, Vollmaier combines in his project Error combines the acoustic sound of the piano with electronic elements and explores new forms of musical dramaturgy.

In 2026, the MPS Studio itself will become the production site for Vollmaier's new works: Right away In June 2026, the artist recorded two albums on the Bösendorfer Grand Imperial at the historic studio. The exceptional grand piano and the legendary acoustics of the MPS Studio are thus an integral part of these new productions.

The collaboration between Vollmaier and MPS Studio has a long history. In 2025, he presented here  Kind of Laibach and Error on the historic Bösendorfer Imperial.

These new works also mark the beginning of an international concert tour: In 2027, Vollmaier will go on tour across Europe with his new material. His performance at the MPS Studio is therefore a special opportunity to experience the artist at a crucial stage in his current artistic development—up close, fully focused, and in the very place where some of this new music is being created.
