CHRIS BROKAW (CODEINE/USA) LIVE-CONCERT

20.03.2026

Four years after his powerful rock album PURITAN lays Chris Brokaw, known as the guitarist of the influential slowcore pioneers Codeine, with GHOST SHIP an intense, atmospherically charged work - a maritime landscape meditation for vocals and electric guitars.

„I actually wanted an 8-song statement in the style of Desert Shore or Raw Power but it ended up being nine songs. I told friends it was ‘Twin Peaks-ish’, but that's only partly true. The songs were written on a Teisco Del Rey electric guitar from the 60s, with heavy flatwound strings, low tuned electric strings and a completely different feel. I wrote everything in a kind of fever.“ - Chris Brokaw

GHOST SHIP is an album that is best listened to in its entirety - loud, close to the speaker, perhaps under a violet light. It feels like a live set that transports you to the bottom of the ocean, under a transmission mast, surrounded by a semi-circle of effects pedals.
Despite its dreamlike quality, the album remains clear and direct: the dialog-like chords of „8 Or 9 Things“, the sharply falling final notes of „Profile“ or the eruptive outburst of „Anything Anymore“ show a special precision. Echolocation-like, the songs miss spaces, distances and things that have disappeared - perhaps drugs, perhaps a lost love. „I'm a ghost ship on a long trip / and if you come aboard I'll never run ashore.“ - Mimi Lipson

Chris Brokaw is known to many above all for his work with Codeine and Come known. Since 2002, he has released over two dozen solo albums and played in The New Year, Pullman, Charnel Ground and the Lemonheads. He has written film music for nine films, most recently Crookedfinger, and composed for dance and art projects, including Lowlands in Stavanger, Norway.

As a versatile musician, he has already worked with Thurston Moore, Christina Rosenvinge, Rhys Chatham, Jennifer O'Connor, Steve Wynn and even GG Allin. He is currently playing in Lupa Citta, The Martha's Vineyard Ferries and the Chris Brokaw Rock Band. He also continues to perform regularly with Codeine and Come on.
