Jazz or rock? Stonerswing? Or perhaps doom jazz? For every new record of the Hedvig Mollestad Trios critics have been trying to find a suitable genre name for their captivating, uncompromising and visceral music. The music magazine Classic Rock came closest: Jazz Sabbath. The band's eclectic mix of influences ranges from Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix, Robert Fripp up to John Coltrane or Bill Frisell and contemporary jazz and heavy sounds. This has proven to be a recipe for success: The Hedvig Mollestad Trio has a steadily growing international fan base.

The trio was founded in 2009 after Mollestad from the Molde Jazz Festival as „young jazz talent of the year“, and the following year was honored by the Norwegian cult label Rune gramophone (Elephant9, Fire! Orchestra, Krokofant, Motorpsycho, among others). Like all their colleagues from Norway, the band is characterized by a high level of musicality and independence.

The trio has become a live favorite, whether you have a heart for jazz or the heavy beats of good old rock'n'roll, and has played everything from grimy little clubs around the world to classic concert halls. Whether opening for John McLaughlin or at the big festivals like Roadburn, Tons of Rock, Berlin Jazz Festival, London Jazz Festival, Tampere Jazz Happening or Øyafestivalen.

As recent performances online and on location have shown, this trio exudes confidence and has become a sure-fire hit on the Norwegian live scene. And while we are right to praise Hedvig's exceptional skills, let's not forget the importance of the rhythm section: Ellen Brekken is an accomplished bassist who drives the band with her electric bass as well as her double bass. And then there is Ivar Loe Bjørnstad, no ordinary rock drummer, no ordinary jazz drummer, but in possession of the above-mentioned loose swing.

We are looking forward to the Black Forest premiere of the Hedvig Mollestad Trio in the MPS studio.

For the realization of the program series we thank the Villingen-Schwenningen Office for Culture .
