Internationally acclaimed female musicians on September 5 at 200 hertz – Female Sounds

Two exceptional musicians from the international jazz scene will be performing at the MPS Studio on Saturday, September 5: The Polish pianist Marta Warelis and the Brazilian drummer, singer, and composer Mariá, Portugal They will perform together for the first time in Villingen-Schwenningen. Their joint concert blends the sounds of modern jazz with elements of contemporary classical music—virtuosic, surprising, and exceptionally powerful.

Mariá Portugal is one of the most remarkable female musicians on the current international jazz scene. Originally from São Paulo, she first studied classical composition, before turning her attention to jazz and new forms of musical expression. Today she lives in Berlin and collaborates with prominent musicians from Europe and America. Her musical partners include, among others, the legendary British guitarist and composer Fred Frith as well as the Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson. Together with Frith, she released the internationally acclaimed album *Matter* in 2025 on the Swiss jazz label Intakt Records.

Even with the renowned Swedish Fire! Orchestra Portugal regularly takes the stage on the international scene. The large ensemble blends jazz, contemporary music, and elements of rock and electronic music, and is one of the leading groups in European contemporary music.

Her musical work has been recognized on numerous occasions: For her film score for the Chilean feature film „1976“, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, earned Portugal a Chilean Film Award for Best Film Score. In addition, she was Nominated for the German Jazz Prize in the Drums/Percussion category in 2025 and 2026. In 2020, she was the 13th „Improviser in Residence“ at the renowned Moers Festival.

Your partner Marta Warelis is one of the most prominent pianists of the young European jazz generation. Born in Poland and now based in the Netherlands and Berlin, she combines classical pianistic virtuosity with the openness of modern jazz. She has performed with, among others, the renowned trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas She has performed in numerous international jazz projects. Her playing ranges from subtly nuanced, almost chamber-music-like passages to moments of great rhythmic and dynamic intensity.

At the MPS Studio, the two musicians now come together in an extraordinary duo lineup. Piano, drums, percussion, and voice engage in a direct dialogue. At times, their interplay evokes contemporary chamber music; at others, the energy of a jazz concert—but the extraordinary musical communication between the two artists always takes center stage.

The concert is part of the series 200 hertz – Female Sounds in which the MPS Studio showcases international female musicians and new musical perspectives. It is precisely this historic, protected studio—with its exceptional acoustics and legendary Bösendorfer Imperial provides an exceptional setting for this.
