OREN AMBARCHI (Australia)

OREN AMBARCHI - Concert & Live Recording exclusively in the MPS Studio.

The Australian composer and multi-instrumentalist Oren Ambarchi is one of the most exciting artists of our time. Ambarchi, who was honored in 2014 by the magazine Pitchfork was named Experimental Artist of the Year, creates carefully cultivated arrangements that gently unravel; unassuming melodies that slowly work their way through sound mutations; the result is an otherworldly, cumulative effect of patiently unfolding compositions.

Ambarchi was born into a family of Sephardic Jews from Iraq. He began his musical career as a free jazz drummer. Later, under the influence of Japanoise to the guitar and became active in the noise scene. He also names the composers Morton Feldman and Alvin Lucier as early influences. In 1993, at the invitation of John Zorns at the Radical Jewish Culture Festival in New York. 1998 began with the one-take recording Stacte his solo career. In the early 2000s, he began working on the University of Western Sydney teaching improvisation. In 2005 he was at Sunn O)))s album Black One involved. A joint album with the pianist was created in 2013 John Tilbury.

He has worked with a variety of artists such as Fennesz, Charlemagne Palestine, Sunn O))), Chris Abrahams (The Necks), Keiji Haino, Alvin Lucier, John Zorn, Merzbow, Manuel Gottsching/Ash Ra, Jim O'Rourke, Keith Rowe, Akio Suzuki, Phill Niblock, John Tilbury, Richard Pinhas, Evan Parker, Crys Cole, Fire! and many others.

In 2003, his live release Triste an honorable mention in the „Prix Ars Electronica“ category for digital music. His release Quixotism was published by the magazine The Wire was included in the top 50 releases of 2014 and in the same year it was recognized by Pitchfork to the Experimental Artist Of The Year chosen. On his 2016 album Hubris he played with an astonishing cast, including Crys Cole, Mark Fell, Arto Lindsay, Jim O'Rourke, Keith Fullerton Whitman and Ricardo Villalobos. Hubris was included in numerous „Best Albums Of 2016“ lists in renowned magazines such as The Wire, Rolling Stone, The Quietus and Tiny Mix Tapes listed.

In May 2019, the renowned London-based Cafe Oto Ambarchi's 50th birthday and the 10th anniversary of its label Black Truffle with a three-day festival that featured a full program of international guests, projects and collaborations, all closely associated with Oren and his label. The live Hubris release on Black Truffle documents the last appearance at this event, which was attended by fifteen of Ambarchi's close associates.

The WIRE-Magazine writes: Ambarchi has developed a highly original guitar technique that retains the warmth of the six-string instrument, even if it owes much to contemporary electronica. Indeed, his music has several links to both post-techno programming and post-noise improv. His compositions move in a fog of understatement, neither settling into drones nor dissolving into a flood of noise. And despite his raw avant-punk roots, his playing has become very accessible - he takes feedback overtones from more aggressive settings and simply presents them as sound. In his pieces, which explore the feeling of incompleteness, he formulates sequences of notes that seem to demand resolution without the composer holding them back. Notes hang in the air while angular phrases are looped eccentrically. The soft touch of his notes creates a mysterious, velvety environment in which the scenes he conjures up constantly dissolve and reform. This is intelligent, thoughtful, proactive ambience.

The MPS studio is delighted that Oren Ambarchi will be coming to Villingen for this exclusive concert. The concert will be recorded live.
