THE EVENT IS SOLD OUT!

RON MINIS TRIO + CHRIS HA TRIO
16.11.2024

The Ron Minis Trio from Israel and the Chris Ha Trio from Freiburg are two three-headed free spirits who actively, exploratively and sometimes even provocatively incorporate genres foreign to classical jazz into their playing. One evening - two concerts, where Baden-Württemberg's young talent meets the international avant-garde.

The concert is also the second evening in the program series TRIO EXPANDED, which reinterrogates the traditional formation of the trio with piano or other keyboard instruments.

A great occasion for the return of the Ron Minis Trios on the MPS studio stage. Those who witnessed his first concert in March 2023 will certainly remember this energetic performance, during which the sounds of our Bösendorfer Grand Imperial entered into a symbiosis with the musician's electric guitar. In the supporting program, we also presented regional newcomers whose line-up had been publicly announced in an OPEN CALL. A jury chose the winner Chris Ha Trio.

Ron Minis is a multi-instrumentalist who invites you to dream and dance at the same time with virtuoso and rhythmic patterns. With his trio, he moves between lyrical phrases and energetic rhythms. The diversity of his songs is hard to beat. Ron Minis creates musical worlds full of emotion, seduces with gentle melodies on the piano, changes abruptly into hammering staccatos and ends in spherical worlds of sound without losing the suspense of his songs. It is not without reason that he is unimpressed by genre boundaries, naming brutal jazz and punk as the home of his music in the same breath. Influences from the Middle Eastern culture of Israel or from artists such as Tigran Hamasyan also contribute to the fact that genre ideas only arise before disappearing again.

The Ron Minis Trio has played at the Montreux Jazz Festival, the NUEJAZZ Festival, Jazz in the Park (Romania) and has repeatedly toured renowned European clubs. In addition to Ron, the trio consists of Yogev Gabayam on drums and Bar Filipowicz on double bass. Together they move skillfully between the math rock of King Crimson, the precision of Miles Davis, the film music of Goblin, the brute force of Helmet and the repetitive rhythms of Terry Riley. Any precise definition of the genre is skillfully avoided, instead musical surprises are brought into the field. Finally, moments in which Ron reaches for his electric guitar on the grand piano and combines both instruments via a sampler make this attitude not only audible but also visible!

Also the Chris Ha Trio is not a classical piano trio, despite the almost classical line-up of Chis Ha on piano, Phil Janz on electric bass and Moritz Ulrich on drums!

Their music combines jazz, minimal music, funk, prog rock, pop and classical music to create their own sound with the aim of „accessible complexity“. Weird rhythms with a certain preference for polyrhythmic passages are juxtaposed with progressive rock elements interspersed with lyrical melodies.

The three musicians have no classical or academic musical training, but see themselves as amateurs in the best sense of the word. Their honest joy of playing is captivating and the three of them are always concerned with communication and understanding. The best reason for music on a stage!

The concert will be recorded live!

For the realization of the program series TRIO EXPANDED we thank the Baden-Württemberg Foundation, the Villingen-Schwenningen Office for Culture and the Freiburg Regional Council for their support as part of their music sponsorship.
