Spain Live at the MPS Studio – Concert with Live Recording

A cult American alternative rock band visits the historic MPS Studio: Spain, led by singer and bassist Josh Haden, plays live in front of an audience—and the recording is rolling.

Founded in Los Angeles in 1993, Spain has developed a distinctive sound that blends melancholic rock, blues, and jazz. At its core is Josh Haden, son of the jazz legend Charlie Haden. His calm, distinctive voice, minimalist arrangements, and the unique tension between melody and silence continue to shape the band's music to this day.

With her debut album The Blue Moods of Spain (1995) brought Spain international attention. The British music magazine Melody Maker named the single „Dreaming of Love“ „Single of the Week“ and wrote enthusiastically: „Who would dare to do something like this? This record is my bible.“ The Los Angeles Weekly described the sound as a mix of West Coast jazz, '60s soul, blues, and the Velvet Underground.

The song „Spiritual“ became particularly well-known; it was later covered by, among others, Johnny Cash as well as from Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden was interpreted. The music by Spain relies on restraint rather than grand gestures: slow grooves, precise arrangements, and songs that make an impact without relying on volume. The New York Times described the debut as a carefully arranged, slowly flowing universe in which the streets are made of red velvet and the fog is as thick as cigarette smoke.

After a break, he returned Josh Haden with Spain back on stage and in the studio. Albums like The Soul of Spain (2012), Sargent Place (2014) and Carolina (2016) continue to develop their signature sound: darkly shimmering, unhurried, and full of emotional depth.

At the MPS Studio, this music is presented in a special setting. The historic studio, a designated landmark, was founded by SABA in 1962 and is closely tied to the history of jazz. Here, Spain’s distinctive soundscape meets a place where music history is not only preserved but also continues to be written. The concert will take place in front of a live audience and will be recorded live—a special opportunity to experience the band up close and to be part of a recording that will endure long after the evening is over.
