STEAMBOAT SWITZERLAND (CH) LIVE-CONCERT
The Zurich ensemble Steamboat Switzerland has been one of the most independent and internationally renowned formations at the interface between new music, improvisation, hardcore, jazz and avant-garde for over 25 years. Founded in 1995, the trio develops an uncompromising, highly energetic sound language that consistently moves beyond stylistic attributions.
The band consists of Dominik Blum (Hammond organ, synthesizer, piano), Marino Pliakas (electric bass, acoustic guitar, double bass) and Lucas Niggli (drums). The Hammond organ forms the sonic center of Steamboat Switzerland and gives the music its raw, analog power. Complex structures, extreme dynamics and a physical groove merge into a dense, immediate live experience.
Steamboat Switzerland has performed at major festivals and stages around the world, including the Donaueschingen Music Days, that Moers Festival, that London Meltdown Festival, as well as on extensive tours through Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. The band has worked with numerous international musiciansinside, composerand artists from the fields of music, theater and performance.
There is a special connection to the visual arts: Steamboat Switzerland worked several times with the painter Albert Oehlen, including in the context of international exhibition openings and art projects. This collaboration underlines the band's proximity to contemporary art and its claim to understand sound as an independent, radical form of expression in dialog with other arts.
Another central point of reference is the work of the exceptional Swiss artist Adolf Wölfli, from which the band's name is derived. Steamboat Switzerland has translated his obsessive visual and sound worlds into a contemporary sound language in large-scale music and theater projects.
In the MPS Studio Steamboat Switzerland encounters a special historical resonance chamber: the music is played on the legendary Hammond organ from 1957, whose characterful sound blends perfectly with the trio's uncompromising, rhythmically charged playing style. The concert promises an intense musical experience between composition, improvisation, groove and eruptive energy.
