Verena Marisa is one of the few Theremin players worldwide. After receiving a classical education in violin and piano—which she found to be somewhat restrictive in its approach to interpretation and, at times, overly focused on technical drill—she found musical liberation in the contactless, gesture-controlled theremin. Transcending genre boundaries, she employs it in a melodic, vocal style and as a testing ground for innovative playing techniques.

Her artistic practice is shaped by meditation and the conscious perception of subtle sensory stimuli. The Theremin serves as biofeedback for deep body awareness.

Thematically, she explores nature, dreams, and transcendence. Her music evokes otherworldly flora and fauna as well as ethereal metaphysical states. Her extensive background as a film composer often shines through in her work.

Marisa is hosting this evening Fred Frith — a pioneer of improvised electric guitar who has had a major influence on the development of experimental music worldwide since the 1960s. Over the course of his 50-year career, he has composed for numerous renowned ensembles and award-winning films.

Fred Frith operates on the principle of radical openness: composition as an open-ended process, the „work“ as an unfinished, constantly evolving entity.

Weaving together Verena Marisa and Fred Frith drawing on their roots in avant-garde, progressive rock, classical music, film scores, and experimental electronic music to create a multi-layered soundscape. With an undeniable presence, they reflect the current mood of the world, caught between chaos and solace.
