STUDIO CONCERT

The MPS studio is pleased to welcome Phil Minton, a legend of vocal improvisation, along with Carl Ludwig Hübsch on tuba, Harald Kimmig on violin, and workshop participants from the Feral Choir to Villingen for a studio concert.

Phil Minton is from Torquay in the United Kingdom. In the early 1960s he played trumpet and sang in the Mike Westbrook Band, and in 1975 Phil Minton formed the vocal quartet Voice with Julie Tippetts (Julie Driscoll), Maggie Nicols and Brian Ely. Later collaborations with John Zorn, Peter Brötzmann, Carla Bley, Tom Cora, Derek Bailey, FM Einheit, Alfred Harth or David Moss, among others. Since the 1980s, his Feral Choir has performed in over twenty countries.

Carl Ludwig Hübsch is a German jazz and improvisational musician. Hübsch first learned the clarinet, then switched to drums and, from 1983, to the tuba.

Since 1989 there have been collaborations with musicians such as Arthur Blythe, Lester Bowie, Jasper van’t Hof, Paul Lytton, Willem Breuker, Tomasz Stańko, Pinguin Moschner, Thomas Lehn, Ernst Reijseger, Gunda Gottschalk, Harald Kimmig, Lê Quan Ninh, Uli Böttcher or Sebastian Gramss.

Hübsch hosted the SWR New Jazz Meeting. Trio Universe with Matthias Schubert and Wolter Wierbos as well as Quartet Drift with Isabelle Duthoit, Joris Rühl and Christian Lillinger to the octet with Philip Zoubek and electronic musician Joker Nies.

Harald Kimmig is a German violinist of free improvised music and composer. He took lessons with Leszek Zadlo, Muneer Abdul Fataah, John Tchicai and Cecil Taylor. From 1984 solo concerts and as a member of the First Improvising String Orchestra. He has played in a trio with Georg Wolf and Lukas Lindenmaier and is co-leader of the F-Orkestra, which has collaborated with musicians such as Buddy Collette and Peter Kowald. Furthermore he played in the ensemble of Cecil Taylor, but also in projects of John Tchicai, Vladimir Chekassin as well as with Doug Hammond, Lee Konitz, Tony Oxley or Gabriele Hasle.

On this evening, the Feral Choir is composed of workshop participants from the previous day who rehearsed under the direction of Phil Minton in the MPS studio.
